Grassroot Soccer (GRS) uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize communities to stop the spread of HIV. GRS uses a culturally sensitive and innovative “skillz” curriculum in their flagship sites in Zimbabwe, South Africa, and Zambia. GRS also supports programs in Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Sudan, Tanzania, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. As a direct result of these partnerships as well as flagship programs, GRS has provided comprehensive HIV prevention and life skills education to more than 270,000 young people throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Kirk Freidrich, a former professional soccer player, founding member and current Managing Director for Africa Programs will be joining us at Change the Game! In 2002 Kirk became one of the original founding members of GRS and played an important role in launching the first GRS programs in Zimbabwe and South Africa, designing the GRS curriculum and educational model, and developing key partnerships. Kirk is currently responsible for the oversight of Africa programs and informing the general strategy and expansion of the organization.
